Recently, several of our dancers took the time to provide a demonstration for the residents at Palm View Rehabilitation Center. The center requested that we provide the demo as several of the residents were former square dancers. Here is what Londa Mannan, President of YSRDA, had to say following the event:

The demo dance at the Palm View Rehabilitation Center today was great--2 squares and 1 extra couple. The people loved it!!! Some sang along with the old songs Steve purposely selected, some kept perfect time with their hands and feet; others told us we were beautiful, and one lady made it a point to tell me our dancing was refreshing.

The happiness on their faces and their asking when we would be back certainly made it worthwhile to go. Steve called "Yellow Rock" in a tip and explained to them what it meant. Afterward, one lady (they were all in wheelchairs) said to Larry when he walked by, "I need one of those yellow hugs!" He hugged her, then told her it was yellow ROCK, so then she started asking anyone who got near for a yellow rock. I hope the Assn. will make this an annual commitment.

Demos are usually performed with the hope of acquiring new dancers. Will this demo produce any new dancers?…..no….. did it put a smile on many faces?…..Definitely! Hats off to all the dancers who took time from their busy day to provide this spot of sunshine in Palm View!

Let’s Honor One of Ours!

Al and Fran made a very special Honor Flight to Wash., D.C. in early Oct. It was truly a trip of a lifetime. They have such good memories and photos from the adventure.

Toledo veteran takes ‘Honor Flight’ to World War II Memorial

Al Westphal of Toledo served in the U.S. Navy aboard the light cruiser U.S.S. Montpelier (CL-57) during World War II.

According to naval records, the “Mighty Monty” took part in the first Allied offensive of the war in the Pacific, became the first to engage in night battles, and participated in 26 invasions, 42 operations and 30 campaigns, logging nearly 250,000 nautical miles. Westphal and his shipmates earned 13 battle stars for their service in all major engagements of the Pacific theatre.

But for the venerable 91-year-old veteran, the experience of a recent 2,600-mile sojourn to Washington, D.C. became what he considers “the trip of a lifetime.” He joined 26 other World War II veterans, along with 24 volunteer “guardians” (support personnel in military terms, usually family members), including Westphal’s wife Fran. They went primarily to visit the World War II Memorial, built near the Lincoln Memorial in 2004 to honor the service and sacrifices of what has become known as the “Greatest Generation.

Westphal and his fellow veterans made their journey courtesy of the nonprofit Honor Flight of Oregon (HFO) headquartered in Grants Pass.It, in turn, is one of four state hubs, for the nationwide Honor Flight Network that took wing in Ohio in 2005 to underwrite trips for World War II veterans to the memorial that honors their contributions to the nation’s history and freedoms – before it’s too late.

Although Westphal and others survived the vagaries of a war that HFO leaders say “truly threatened our very existence as a nation, and as a culturally diverse, free society,” they are inevitably losing to an inexorable foe: time. According to the Department of veterans Affairs, the youngest World War II veteran is more than 80 years old, and within the next decade, most of them will be gone, ultimately joining the 400,000 who died in the war more than six decades ago.

Honor Flight, which quickly gained momentum and now has 71 hubs in 30 states, accepts applications from veterans wanting to make the trip to C.C., giving top priority to those who served in World War II.

But, despite their dwindling ranks, veterans often end up on a waiting list, because Honor Flight lacks government support, depending mainly on veteran service organizations and public donations, along with a growing number of corporate sponsors, Gail Yakopatz, who heads up HFO, said they get some corporate support, but much of their funding derives from small businesses.

“Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out,” she said, noting that additional public support from groups or individuals is needed to help make the visit a reality for all remaining World War II veterans.

Westphal said he appreciated the expressions of gratitude he and his fellow veterans received from school children and other folks at the memorial and along the way. Fran said dozens of folks thanked the veterans for their service, gathering “to shake their hands, applaud them and wave flags and provide honor guards” in airports and other venues.

Lighthouse Inspector

Although not as agile as he once was, Al also was once again able to make his lighthouse inspection at Cleft of the Rock, near Yachats. When he isn’t at home, he uses a walker most times. Yet, he climbs the ladder to check out the light at the top of the lighthouse on his annual visit.

Truly a remarkable man, former square dance caller,Al still visits square dances whenever possible, always with a wide smile on his face. Next time you see him at a dance, take a few minutes to visit and discover all that this fascinating man has to share.

Spend Some Time with Friends

The Mainstream Dance will be from 7 – 9:30 p.m. Patty Porter will cue rounds.

The floor was a swirl of colors as 10 squares kicked off the December Association Dance.

Guest Caller, Jack Peterson of Surprise, AZ provided a lively evening. Cueing for rounds was our own Ron Noble.

As usual at an Association Dance, the snack table was a popular place to visit.

Al and Tom made sure everyone signed in and purchased their 50/50 tickets.

Betty was on hand in her Boutique to assist customers with choosing new apparel for the holidays or the upcoming Festival.

There’s just something about a square dance that makes time seem to go doubly fast. Before long it was time to form that big circle signaling the end of the dance.

Welcome Back Dance

Seven squares formed for the Welcome Back Dance, Yuma’s first official dance of the season, Sunday, November 20.

Emcee for the event was Steve Porter. Also calling was Bob Stutevoss.

Round Dancers enjoyed dancing to Patty Porter, Kristine Nelson, and Ken Boyd.

As usual at an Association Dance, the finger foods were plentiful, as were the donations to our mission food box.

The 2011 Welcome Back Dance, sponsored by the Yuma Square and Round Dance Association will be Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 PM in the Yuma Square Dance Hall.

All of Yuma’s Square Dance Callers and Round Dance Cuers are invited to Call and Cue at this event, making it a fun afternoon of dancing and greeting friends we haven’t seen for a while.

Dance level will be MAINSTREAM.

Admission is FREE, courtesy of the Association. Casual attire is fine.

Jamboree at the Fort

Dancers from BC, AB, SK and the USA enjoyed a wonderful Labor Day weekend at the 2011 Alberta Jamboree in Fort Saskatchewan, AB. Many Yuma dancers attended this event.
Murray Few, Jerry Pierce and Gary Winter who were the five local callers from Edmonton were joined by callers Barry Sjolin from Penticton, BC and Jerry Jestin from Yuma, AZ.   These five great callers along with cuer couple Ron and Donna Baba from Medicine Hat, AB kept everyone dancing from Friday night until noon on Monday.
This event included workshops for MS, PL, A1-A2 and Rounds as well as an After Party on Saturday night. Free shuttle service was provided from the RV camping site where many friendships were renewed and new ones made.   This camping area was a busy and happy spot the whole weekend and added to the enjoyment of nearly 300 dancers who attended the Jamboree.
Gene and Patt Jones attended this event although they missed getting into the group picture below as did a number of other Yuma dancers.
The Alberta Jamboree Dance Society will be hosting their next Jamboree in Red Deer, Alberta on the September long weekend in 2013.   Mark your calendars!

We left Yuma April 1st and traveled by car to Daytona Beach, FL to some spend time with Card's son and family.

From there we drove to Salem, IN and visited friends. After we left there we got right in the middle of all the tornadoes. We were going to do some sightseeing but, decided to head for home, Gresham, OR. We were able to stay ahead of the storms; then when we got to the high country we had to worry about blizzards. I do believe we had 'company' with us to keep us safe. Needless to say, we were happy to get home.

Then we took off for Lolo, MT to be there for the 4th. As you can see by the picture of the group that there were a number of our Yuma friends there.

Jay, Gladys and us went up to Hungry Horse Reservoir for a couple of days and visited with Steve and Patty Porter. What a joy it was to spend time with them! It was beautiful up there.

We left Lolo Aug. 15 to be home for my family get-together. That was the 'climax' of our summer.

Creston, BC Weekend Square Dance Festival

The last weekend of May, we went to the Creston B.C. Weekend. This may be their last May festival for many, many years; after more than 35 years, the club has had to close down due to a lack of dancers. Their callers were Rick & Kathie Utter for over 25 years from Moyie Springs, Idaho.

This is the long time Caller, Cuer of the Swan Valley Swingers, Creston, B. C.

There were 8 squares from Alberta,B.C. and Idaho at the Festival. We were in a new hall so the Idaho square dancers brought a stage free of charge. The cuers were younger people, which is nice to see. The cuer was Justine Brown from Athol and the Idaho Caller was Adam Christman, from Spokane, Wash:

Fun weekend was had by all.

Our summer trip with Steve & Judy Smith, Al & Tina Sampson

Steve & Judy Smith and Al & Tina Sampson arrived on June 13th.

The gang of 6, Al &Tina, Steve & Judy, Ed (photographer) & Norma, Keagan, & Bailey:

We left on June 14th travelling up the Okanagan valley to Kelowna, B. C., having dinner with friends that both couples know. Travelling the next day farther up the Okanagan valley to Salmon Arm,then to Kamloops visiting friends that Al & Tina and we knew (former square dancers); from there on to Clinton, B. C. and the next day to Quesnel.

After an overnight stay, the trip led into Barkerville the next day. We saw cow moose and calf,also deer; next day to Chetwyn B.C. Visited Hudson Hope the next day to see the W.A.C Bennett dam, one of the B. C. Hydro Electric Dams. Following day, we were at Tumbler ridge to see the Kinuseo Falls Waterfalls. That was an all day trip.

Then onto Dawson Creek to our grandson's graduation. Thanks to Steve & Judy and Al and Tina for staying an extra day.

Then it was on to Grande Prairie, Alberta. South to Grande Cache & Hinton,then to Jasper National Park and its Ice Fields.

The Ice Field buses that transport you up to the ice fields.

Since the early '70 the ice fields have receded 2 miles.

We camped at Lake Louise for 2 nights, visiting the Lodge at Lake Louise and Banff. Al & Tina took us to a falls that we had never been too, which was 254 meters drop (or 825 ft.) Then on to Radium Hot Springs,more moose,deer mountain sheep and 1 elk.

Next stop Kimberly, B.C. which is a Bavarian Style downtown and Cranbrook B.C. for the night. Following day to Creston, B.C. up the east side of Kootenay Lake to Crawford bay. Took a ferry down the lake to Balfour, B.C., picking up some real good cinnamon buns at the bakery to have afternoon coffee with Cindy & Barry Lipscomb, who all 6 of us know through dancing (part time residence of Westwind's). After staying there 2 nights, Al and Tina left to go to Colville on the 2nd of July. Steve & Judy and we left on the 3rd of July for Castlegar to visit Gordon & Sharron McFadden; We then departed back to Oliver and Steve & Judy continued on to Colville with Al & Tina and then on to Lolo, Montana for the rest of the summer.

Hope they had a good trip, we sure did.

A Summer Update from the Odoms

When we left Yuma we vacationed at Lake Powell in Northern Arizona, where we enjoyed a boat trip and hike to Rainbow Bridge.

Before leaving the area we also went through Antelope Canyon with its amazing colors and light beams.

From there we visited our daughter on a thoroughbred horse ranch near Vacaville CA.

Our two sons live near Seattle, WA where the one in Des Moines, WA has room for us to park in his back yard. The weather hasn't been the best but that seems to be the norm.

We have had good visits with friends and family and are ready to be in Yuma again.

Our first item comes from retired Yuma cuer, Arnold Tramp, and wife Jeannette.

We are now back in SD. After leaving Yuma June 9 we went to our Grandson’s graduation in San Diego and up the west coast, then across MT visiting friends, relatives, and former and present square dancers before getting home in SD.

We did get to Kalispell, MT and went on a hot air balloon flight with Steve and Patty Porter (Yuma Caller and Cuer) on July 4th. The flight was canceled the day before because of the wind, but on July 4th the weather was great.

Just a quick note - more info to follow on our summer. Just thought you might like to know yesterday it was around 55 degrees for a high here. Roy and I walked last night after supper and I wore the jacket I wore in Yuma last winter AND my gloves! Today should be somewhat warmer but it has been cool and wet for most of the time we have been home.

Steve and I have done a lot of traveling this summer, met up with Ed and Norma Emery, our winter renters. They took us on a trip to British Columbia and into Alberta to the ice fields. We had a wonderful time and saw a lot of beautiful country, not to mention all the animals along the road, just watching the traffic go by.

We are now down in Lolo, Montana till the end of Aug. We have had a very cool summer so far, and a lot of rain. Broke down and turned the heater on this morning, it was in the low 40's. Sure beats being in the heat in the midwest or in fact , Yuma.

Getting some square dancing in here and a lot of square dance friends have been arriving. Nice to see every one again. Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Well, looking at the News and seeing the heatwave back East, maybe we are lucky here in British Columbia - we are still waiting for summer.    Rain and clouds and more rain.!!     I was watching the News from Seattle the other evening and the Weather Man said they had had ONE day this year where the temperature actually got above 80F.

Maybe you people out East can send us a bit of your sunshine - but not the tremendous heat you are experiencing at the moment.   Today, 23rd July we have had sunshine all day, but it is only 1 pm - no doubt the clouds will arrive soon.

I went with my friend to Alaska again on a Holland America cruise at the beginning of July - guess what??   Rain, clouds and fog - as we steamed back into Canadian waters the sun shone and the sky was blue.

The Rileys Visit Indiana and the Adamsons

On a cross country trip this summer, Yuma square dancers, Wes and Bunny Riley stopped by Central Indiana to spend a couple of days with us. We met at McCormick’s Creek State Park. We’re used to being there as camphosts, but this time we returned as campers.

We went on a day trip together to Vincennes, Indiana. Vincennes, lying on the border of Indiana and Illinois, is the oldest city in Indiana, dating back to its beginning as a French trading post in 1732. In 1779, George Rogers Clark (brother to William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame) led a battle against the British at Vincennes. Despite tremendous odds and a bitterly cold winter, Clark and his soldiers took the largest land conquest of the Revolutionary War from the British.

A majestic memorial marks the site.

Inside, impressive mural surrounding the rotunda tell the story of the battle.

This photo gives you an idea of the scale of the building and the statue of Clark.

The Indiana Territory, as the area became known, was much larger than the present day state of Indiana.

Vincennes served as it’s capitol until 1812, when a new building was built in Corydon.

There is a small area preserved in Vincennes containing that first territory capitol. Built as a tailor’s shop, it is a modest building.

Standing next to the capitol is Jefferson Academy, founded in 1801.

Now Vincennes University, it is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Indiana.

Just down from the capitol building is a little white house containing the Elihu Stout Print Shop. As the new territorial legislatures soon realized, the public had to be informed of their government’s activities, and the first state newspaper was born.

The Adamsons Camp Host in Indiana

We spent the month of June camp hosting at our favorite Indiana State Park, McCormick’s Creek.

Usually when camp hosting at the park (this is our 5th summer), we are on A Loop, but this year were parked on B Loop, which is a little more wooded and shady.

Although we had more rain than we would have liked, there were days when we could hike the park trails.

The site had an area that traditionally stays muddy, but with the help of park employees, we mulched the area and added a little color.

We had several hummingbirds feeding daily.

The month became like a retreat for us. I enjoyed catching up on reading, and Ron began carving another wooden chain.

This is the 6th chain he has carved. One hangs in the Nature Center of the Park.

It’s amazing how many visitors this year stopped to tell him they had seen the one in the Center and wanted to see how it was fashioned. He especially enjoyed showing his work to the youngsters.

In addition to several visits from family members, we enjoyed visiting often with fellow camp hosts, Bennie and Mabel Smith. Some evenings were actually cool enough to enjoy sitting near a fire.

We took a weekend off from the month to celebrate Christmas In the Summer with our family, traveling to brother Gary’s cabin in eastern Kentucky.

The location is beautiful, with the cabin overlooking the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Seventeen family members spent the night in the small cabin, making for a lot of fun. (We even had a Charlie Brown Christmas tree!)

June was a good month for us. We left the park at the end of the month to spend a couple of weeks with family, but will return to camp host for another month starting July 15.

Drippy Montana

Hi Everyone,
Well here we are in Montana, or maybe we're in Portland, Oregon. Couldn't
tell the difference by the weather. But that's ok, it's cool.

Patty and I have been really busy getting the park in shape for the summer travelers.
This year we decided to plant a real veggie garden, so we rented a tiller.
Talk about Whoa Nellie, this tiller had a mind of it's own; it gives
another meaning to the words Gee and Haw.

You all have a great Summer and if your travels get you to Montana, stop
in and see us and have a carrot or radish or zucchini or corn.

We enjoyed dancing at the 2011 Minnesota State Square Dance Convention held in the Mayo Convention Center in Rochester during the past weekend. The featured caller was Jerry Junck. We found him to be extremely smooth.

The Convention Center is connected to the downtown hotels and parking ramps by a covered elevated walkway ... camping was at the county fairgrounds (the water tower at the nearby cannery is shaped like an ear of corn)

The Kempers Celebrate Their Anniversary with a Wedding

We thought we would share a little with you on our trip to Florida. Myra's granddaughter was married on the beach just out of Sarasota on May 21, which is also the date of our wedding 6 years ago. So, we flew down and had a wonderful week with the wedding party and got to meet her new husband's family. By the way, he was a pitcher in the minor leagues for several years. He stands 6 feet, 6 inches, so I guess he can really toss that ball over the plate.

After the wedding they went to Jamaica for their honeymoon. Myra and I had him convinced we were going there also to celebrate our anniversary. However, we went to Orlando and played around for a few days at Epcot Center and a few other places.

Then, we drove up to Valdosta, Georgia to visit with Myra’s relatives. It was really hot there, upper 90's with 100% humidity. We spent about a week visiting and sightseeing. We didn't look for any square dance clubs, since we didn't have the laptop with us for the internet. It would probably have been too hot to dance anyway.

We’re back in Idaho now, dancing with our local club.

Hi Square Dancers.....We just got home from a great weekend camp out at Tees, Alberta...dancing to Jerry Jestin. What a great weekend we had.

The hall was full of high energy dancing and meeting new and old friends. What a great showing from friends that we dance with in Yuma all winter. So sorry I didn't take my camera to get pictures...maybe next time.

This coming week we are off again to another camp out to dance with Jerry again...this time Wilton Hall. It is a sell out so should be another great time.

The weather cooperated with us this time so had lots of visiting and laughing. Where can you find better times than with a group of square dancers? Hope to meet you all on the floor again soon.

We are in Dubuque, IA at the River City Weekend with Jerry Story and friends (Bob Asp and Dave Sutter) ... there are 5 plus dancing sessions ... we really enjoy dancing to Jerry Story ... his enthusiasm and joy of calling really makes this an enjoyable event ... there are generally 16 to 20 squares on the floor ...

We are here with one other couple from our club at home ... we live about 3.5 hours away from Dubuque ... they have RV parking on the grounds with 30 amp electrical hookups ... we dance on a beautiful wood floor.

We are looking forward to being in a square in Yuma next winter.

Birthday celebrant, Al Westphal took his first lessons 62 years ago (that’s not a misprint – 62 years!) in Ocean Park in 1949. The superintendent of schools wanted to start a square dance club. Al says he was dragged to the lessons against his will (said with a big smile) but learned that first night how much fun square dancing could be.

He actually became a club caller for a while when caller Pete Wright got him interested in learning to call. He learned to call both Patter style and Singing Calls, and still has his records from then.

When he started dancing, there were 80 calls total.

He has been married to Fran for 40 years. Since a stroke he can no longer square dance, but enjoys watching the dancing and visiting with everyone.

A Bittersweet End to the Season

This week marks the beginning of the end of Yuma’s 2010-2011 Dance Season. The last dances for each caller and cuer are listed at the bottom of this post, but first we want to invite you to a party!

A very Special event is scheduled for Monday night, March 28! Al Westphal’s 91st Birthday Celebration! It will be the last Monday night dance of the season with Steve & Patty Porter at Sun Vista. Everyone is invited to come and dance or just to stop by to visit and give Al a birthday hug. Pre-rounds start at 7:00 and plus at 7:30.

Cake and ice cream and a card for everyone to sign will be provided.

Beginner’s Hoedown

For many of the Yuma dancers filling the 10 squares in the hall, last Sunday, March 13, was the last time they would visit and dance in Yuma until next November. Yes, almost unbelievably, the season is almost over and it’s time for the spring exodus of the winter snowbirds. (A link to more dancing photos from the day is at the bottom of this post)

2011 Travelin’ Dancers Festival Recap

Friday Evening

The sun may have been setting and the day coming to an end, but the excitement was just starting when Jerry Jestin arrived at the Civic Center on Friday, February 11, 2011. The annual Yuma Square and Round Dance Festival was about to begin, celebrating 61 years of dancing in Yuma, Arizona.

But a successful Festival doesn’t happen without a lot of preparation, some of it months ahead, and much of it during the hours just prior to opening the doors. Once again, Bunny Riley was in charge of decorating, and she developed the theme of Travelin’ Dancers well. The large auditorium was decked with multiple posters, depicting various travel destinations.

In the West Wing, the Mainstream Hall had been relocated to Ireland.

Across the Civic Center, the East Wing had been moved to Canada for the A-1 and A-2 Dancers.

Out in the entry hall, the vendors were putting last touches to their displays. Walking into Mondiki’s Square Dance Clothing was like entering a rainbow.

Next door, Cloud Nine Dance Shoes of San Fernando, CA, had dancing shoes of every description on display.

In anticipation of sore feet, Advanced Tech Orthotics were ready to offer comfort.

The Welcoming Committee was ready with hugs at the door as the dancers began to arrive.

Volunteers were at the desk selling ribbons and providing information.

Throughout the weekend, the faces of the volunteers would change, but the expressions remained the same…a welcoming smile.

Leroy, Co-President, checked out the orthotics booth.

Others shopped for clothing and shoes.

Ruth discovered Mondiki’s piggy bank held extra discounts for shoppers.

Several wanted to purchase bars and dangles or badges from Sq-Dini Badges as souvenirs of the Festival.

Some browsed through the many flyers for upcoming special dances and festivals.

And many used the time to reunite with old friends.

Inside the main hall, Jerry was putting the final touches on the Sound System and the Split the Pot Crew was ready for customers.

The dancing was about to begin!

Callers for the weekend were Wade Driver, Mike Seastrom and Jerry Jestin.

Cueing rounds were Rey and Sherry Garza and Ron and Mary Noble.

Saturday Morning

Dancers arrived by 9:30 on Saturday morning for the first of many workshops throughout the day. Many had spent the night in the comfort of their home, parked in the dry camping area of the Civic Center parking lot. Wagonmasters, Bob and Marilyn Partiss were on hand to assist with any needs.

Throughout the day, for the first time at our Festival, the snack bar was open for those desiring nourishment or drinks.

After a short break for dinner, dancers began arriving back at the center for the evening dances. They were greeted at the door by the Yuma Caballeros, a group of business men who have been welcoming visitors to Yuma for 49 years.

Callers, Mike Seastrom and Wade Driver took time to clown around with the photographer.

Special photographers, Candy Fiddes and Joan Contreras, offered the opportunity to have a portrait made. They also videoed parts of the Festival, and offered the videos on cd.

We caught First Vice President Londa Mannon a little later tucked in a corner resting a sore leg.

Pre-Rounds started at 7. At 7:30 dancers gathered in the foyer to line up for the Grand March. A Grand March is always an impressive sight as hundreds of dancers enter and circle the hall together.

Yuma Civil Air Patrol Color Guard provided the Presentation of the Flags.

The invocation was given by Norman Rockwell, and the welcome by Mayor Alan L. Krieger.

Co-Presidents Gene and Pat Jones also welcomed the dancers, and Jerry Jestin presented the callers and cuers.

Later, after a fun evening of dancing, the tired dancers gathered chairs together for the traditional rollicking after party of skits from the festival callers and cuers.

Jerry finished the evening with his traditional “Words of Wisdom”.

Sunday Morning

Sunday’s Donut Dance at 8 a.m. seemed to come very early to the sleepy dancers. Hoyt and Bernice Odom had been up before dawn to pick up the dozens and dozens of donuts.

First order of the day was singing “Happy Birthday” to Hoyt.

All of the Festival Callers and Cuers were still on hand to provide a fun morning of dancing. Kristine Nelson joined Ron and Rey for a “tag round”.

Also calling a tip was caller Gordy Oseth from Lake Havasu, and cuing a round was Ken Boyd.

10:30 a.m. and another Festival had come to an end. Within minutes, all the decorations were down, and someone entering the center would never dream of all the fun that had occurred since early Friday evening.

Jerry and Janice Jestin have had to make some changes to their Monday, February 14, schedule, due to Valentine Day activities at Country Roads RV Resort.

All Clogging with Janice for Monday, February 14, is cancelled.

Phase 3 Round Dance Lesson/Workshop with Jerry is cancelled.

The Plus Workshop will be held, but at a different time. Plus Workshop is at 3:30 p.m.

A2 Dance will be held at the regular time on Monday Night at Country Roads (7 p.m.)

Also, we have the following cancellations from Steve Porter:

Mainstream Dance is cancelled for Sunday, February 13, at Fortuna Palms (they expect you will have worn holes in your dancing shoes by then at Festival ).

Plus Dance is cancelled for Monday, February 14, at Sun Vista. Sun Vista has Valentine Day activities planned for their ballroom.

New Beginner Lessons offered

My name is Bob Simonds from Fairfield, Ca. I started dancing in 1968 and danced for about 10- 12 years before Uncle Sam decided I needed to travel more.

About 2004 I started square dancing again with the Twin City Steppers, in Fairfield, CA, The Pioneers,Vallejo, CA, and a New Club that started in Vacaville CA.

I started calling about three years ago. I completed Northern California Callers School in the middle of 2009, and I'm a member of Caller Lab.

Last year I had to take off for personal reasons. This year, I hope to get back into calling. I have started a new dancer class

on Mondays and Thursdays at 10am at

the Yuma Square Dance Hall on 2225 E.Palo Verde St.

My new dance class will be free for the first two lessons and after that it will run $4.00 a person. I hope to see many new faces there.

The 2011 January Association Dance kicked off with an enthusiastic start from the 12 squares present.
On hand to call was Darrell Newell of Lake Havasu City (you probably know him best as the proprietor of Mondiki Square Dance Apparel). It’s obvious when you dance to Darrell that he has a lot of fun calling, as do the dancers dancing! Laughter rang through the hall often.

Darrell Newell, Caller for Saturday’s Dance

Darrell Newell will be our Caller for the January Association Dance, coming up this Saturday, January 8 at 7 p.m. at the Yuma Square Dance Hall (2255 E. Palo Verde). Darrell is a familiar face to dancers in Yuma. Formerly of Hillsboro, Oregon, he now resides in Lake Havasu City, AZ and is the owner of Mondiki, a square dance apparel shop. He brings beautiful items from the shop each year to our festival as a vendor. He last called at an Association dance for us in December of 2008.

If you have your 2011 Festival Ribbon, admission to the dance is free. Ribbons may also be purchased at the door or from any of our callers and cuers. Now is time to purchase your ribbon… it is still available for the discounted price of $25 per person ($30 after Feb 1). Admission for the dance without ribbon is $3.50.

As at all Association Dances, we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Crossroads Mission. Also, bring finger foods to share.

Pre-New Year’s Eve

You’ll have plenty of chances to dance away some of the extra Christmas calories with three special dances scheduled for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Jerry and Janice are hosting two Pre-New Year’s Eve Dances on December 28 and 29. Following their regular evening dances each night, there will be an “after-party” with music, dancing and socializing. They ask that you bring finger foods to share. Dances will be held at Westwind RV Resort beginning at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Drinks may be purchased from the Westwind “Cheers” lounge.

New Year’s Eve

Then, on New Year’s Eve, join Bob and Jan Stutevoss, Steve and Patty Porter, and Bob and Leslie Tallman for their special combination dance from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. (or later).

Beginning at 7:00 with Pre-Rounds by Patty, Squares will start at 7:30 p.m., alternating callers. Dance will be Mainstream with announced Plus tips.

Bring a snack to share. Dance is at the Yuma Square Dance Hall. Admission: $5 per person.

December Association Dance

It was “beginning to look a lot like Christmas” last Saturday evening, as eleven squares filled the square dance hall for the December Association Dance.

Energy and Fun emanated from both Caller, Dale Dockery, and Cuer, Kristine Nelson! Dale was a hit with the dancers with his high energy calling and jokes between tips.

Kristine got lots of laughs when she introduced Hero Hippo, her new partner, helping her with her favorite Christmas song for this year, “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas!”

Jerry Jestin was the caller on Tuesday for a demo at Yuma’s Welcome Back Winter Visitor’s Bash. Enough dancers for four squares showed up, and not one extra dancer to take photos! That’s fine…

Co-Presidents, Patt and Gene, sent the comment “Really a "spirited bunch" and a lively crowd too. Weather was perfect..... a fun time. A big thank you to Jerry for a job well-done, as usual, and thanks to all the dancers who dressed up and did a wonderful job supporting our square dancing association, while having a good time too.”

Friday Night Dance Canceled

The Friday night Mainstream Dance at the Yuma Square Dance Hall with Bob Stutevoss has been canceled for this week, December 10. There will be a Beginner’s Class as usual on Saturday morning, as well as a demo with Bob at noon (located at 1st Street and 4th Avenue… dancers should gather shortly before noon). Saturday night is the Association Dance with Dale Dockery.
